What Is a Thai Residency Certificate?
A Residency Certificate (also called a Certificate of Residence or a letter of address verification) is an official document issued by Thai Immigration confirming that you live at a specific address in Thailand. Banks require it to open an account. The DLT requires it to apply for a Thai driving licence. The Transport Office requires it for vehicle registration. It is not a visa, not a work permit, not proof of legal stay. It is purely a confirmation of address from an official source.
Who Can Apply?
Any foreigner legally residing in Thailand on a non-immigrant visa (Retirement, Marriage, ED, Business, DTV, LTR) can apply for a Residency Certificate. You cannot apply on a tourist visa or visa exempt entry. The document confirms long-term address; it is only meaningful for people with an established stay.
You also need an active TM30 on file. TM30 is the accommodation notification your landlord or hotel is supposed to file within 24 hours of your arrival. If it is not on file, apply for it first. See our guide on TM30 filing in Chiang Mai.
What You Need to Bring
Immigration requests for Residency Certificates are processed at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office on Airport Road. The required documents are:
- Passport (original)
- Copy of passport photo/bio page
- Copy of current visa and most recent entry stamp
- Copy of TM6 departure card (if still in use) or proof of arrival
- Completed application form (available at Immigration or downloadable)
- Two passport-size photos (4x6 cm, white background, recent)
- Proof of address: rental agreement, or utility bill in your name, or landlord letter
Photo copies: Bring more copies than you think you need. Immigration often asks for an extra set. Having three sets of every document saves a trip to the copy shop across the road.
How Long Does It Take?
Standard processing at Immigration is 1 to 3 business days. You submit in the morning, come back the following day or two later to collect. During busy periods (around school enrolment season or end-of-year) it can stretch to 3 days. The certificate is valid for 30 days from issue, so time your application around when you actually need it.
If you need it urgently, for a bank appointment or DLT visit already booked, use a visa agent (see below).
The Fastest Way: Visa Agents
Two Chiang Mai agents consistently get Residency Certificates done in one business day, sometimes same-day:
Colonel Visa
Located directly across Airport Road from the Immigration office. They have long-standing relationships with Immigration officers and understand what documents are required to avoid delays. Fee range: 500 to 1,000 THB depending on urgency and visa type. Recommended for straightforward cases where you just need speed.
Napa Visa Services
Located in the Chang Klan area (near the Night Bazaar). Handles more complex cases alongside the standard certificate. Fee range: 800 to 1,500 THB. Good option if you have a non-standard visa situation or need multiple documents handled at once.
Both agents will tell you upfront if your TM30 is a problem. If it is not on file, they will often handle that simultaneously, factor an extra day if this applies to you.
Postal option: Some expats have successfully applied by registered mail, including a stamped self-addressed envelope for return. This takes 5 to 10 working days and is only practical if you are not in a hurry. Send to: Immigration Office, 71 M.3 Airport Road, Tambon Suthep, Amphoe Mueang, Chiang Mai 50200.
What Happens at Immigration
Take a number from the officer at the entrance and wait for your number at the relevant counter. For Residency Certificates, ask for the correct counter on arrival, it changes occasionally and there is no permanent signage in English. An officer will check your documents, complete the form if not already done, and give you a claim slip with a collection date.
Immigration is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Closed on public holidays. Lunch hour (12 to 1 PM) some counters close. Arrive by 9 AM for the shortest queues.
Uses for Your Residency Certificate
| Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|
| Thai bank account | Most banks require it for non-immigrant visa holders |
| Thai driving licence | DLT requires it within 30 days of issue |
| Vehicle registration / transfer | Required for motorbike or car purchase in your name |
| SIM card (some providers) | AIS and DTAC occasionally ask for it for long-term plans |
| Rental agreements | Some landlords for formal leases |
The Quick Version
Apply at Airport Road Immigration with passport, address proof, two photos, and TM30 on file. Standard time is 1 to 3 business days. For same-day, use Colonel Visa across the road or Napa Visa in Chang Klan. Valid for 30 days from issue. Free from Immigration, 500 to 1,500 THB via agent.
Guru Tip
Always get two copies stamped when you collect your Residency Certificate. Immigration will do this at no extra charge. Banks and the DLT each keep the original, and you have spares if a third party unexpectedly asks for one. A single trip to get both copies saved multiple expats a repeat visit.

Apply at Chiang Mai Immigration on Airport Road. Bring your passport, valid visa, TM30 on file, and passport-size photos. Some officers request a tenancy agreement. Typically issued same-day for 500 THB.
